Mad Cow Theatre is seeking non-equity professional actors for its upcoming production of Pippin. All roles are paid. We anticipate offering AEA contracts once again in 2022.

At Mad Cow Theatre, we recognize that there have been blind spots in live theatre. We aim to rectify the mistakes of the past. We vow to work every day to make this theatre a place of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. We understand that representation matters, and we want Mad Cow Theatre to be a place that includes all people.

Towards that end, “traditional” casting will be a thing of the past here at Mad Cow Theatre. We welcome actors of every race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, and ability to attend our auditions. We will practice casting that is gender diverse and color conscious. We know that we will not be perfect moving forward, so we ask to be held accountable to our community. We make this commitment to you in hopes that you will join us on our journey.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Pippin follows the journey of a young prince as he seeks fulfillment and purpose in life. Along the way, he discovers the glories of battle, the power of the throne, and the peace of the countryside. Ultimately, he learns just where true happiness can be found.

CHARACTERS

All actors will play multiple roles and must move well. Performers proficient in musical instruments and/or special skills especially encouraged to submit.

Pippin – Male, 20s, any ethnicity. Heir to the throne of his father, Charlemagne. He searches for purpose, happiness, and glory. Unhappy and naïve, he matures throughout the play and finds meaning through falling in love with Catherine and caring for her son, Theo. Range: G2 – Ab4

Leading Player – Any gender, 18+, any ethnicity. The ring leader of the players. Charming, mysterious, and manipulative. Consumed with putting on a great show and willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. Range: Db3 – Ab4

Charlemagne – Male, 50s – 60s, any ethnicity. King of the Holy Roman Empire and Pippin’s father. A ruthless and proud warrior who is more comfortable with battle than peace. Range: G2 – E4

Fastrada – Female, 30s – 40s, any ethnicity. Pippin’s stepmother. Conniving and sexy, she uses her intellect and her body to get what she wants. Comfortable with deception and betrayal. Willing to do anything to make her son next in line for the throne. Range: A3 – F5

Lewis – Male, late teens – 20s, any ethnicity. Charlemagne and Fastrada’s son. Next in line for the throne after Pippin. He is as strong as he is stupid. The only thing he loves more than wrestling is himself.

Berthe – Female, 60s, any ethnicity. Pippin’s grandmother. Sassy and wise, she tries to help Pippin discover what matters most in life. Range: E3 – C5

Catherine – Female, 20s – mid 30s, any ethnicity. Pippin’s love interest and Theo’s widowed mother. Beautiful, elegant, and deeply romantic. A member of the players, she is generous, kind, and strong-willed. Range: F#3 – Db5

Theo – Male, 6 – 10, any ethnicity. Catherine’s son. Initially rebellious, he eventually warms to Pippin. (Note: Role may be played by a young female.) Range: E4 – 65

The Ensemble – Any gender, any age, any ethnicity. An extraordinary group of actor-singers will play multiple roles, including Charlemagne's army, nobility, monks, peasants, and the Players.
