GUTENBERG: THE MUSICAL!
By Scott Brown and Anthony King
SYNOPSIS
In this two-person musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new, ill-advised project – a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them that elusive Broadway contract.

CASTING BREAKDOWN
-DOUG SIMON is an innocent. He's a naive, utterly sincere and earnest man who never met a cause he wasn't passionate about. He's a jack of all trades, master of none, who compensates with an infectious, matter-of-fact energy and focus that would probably sound condescending if he weren't so likable. He's incredibly proud of the show he wrote with Bud, and thinks Bud, whom he adores, is a genius.
-BUD DAVENPORT is an innocent. He's eager to please, and thrives on approval. When Bud sings one of his songs, he's reveling in his own "brilliance." But he's too naive to be a true egomaniac; if anything, he's overly grateful for the mere opportunity to create and perform. Bud enjoys getting caught up in Doug's passion and admires his friend's Big Ideas.
*All of the roles were originally written for men, but there's no reason any of the roles couldn't, with only slight changes, be played by anyone.

Conceived and Created by David Grapes and Todd Olson
Original Book by Todd Olson, Arrangements by Vince di Mura
SYNOPSIS
If you’re a fan of Sinatra, the American Songbook or a lover of jazz and swing music, “My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” is the show for you! It’s the must-see musical that celebrates the mystique of Frank Sinatra and the music he made famous. Join the cast in a night club atmosphere for a trip through Sinatra’s life from his early beginnings in New York during the 1940s swing era, to the bright lights of Vegas with the Rat Pack in the 1960s, on to his final performances in the 1990s as “Chairman of the Board.” The bar is stocked, and we’ve got a live band ready to play your favorite songs including “Fly Me to the Moon,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “It Was a Very Good Year,” and “Strangers in the Night” to name just a few. Join us in celebrating the music of the man many call the greatest pop vocalist of the 20th Century; Grab a martini, and drink in “My Way”!

Rehearses: Monday-Friday (10-4pm)
1st Rehearsal: January 18, 2027

CASTING BREAKDOWN
-Man #1 - Leader of the pack. Is the center of the party and able to guide the audience through the life of Sinatra with ease. Smooth, classy and wants all the attention. Man #1 should have a deep/rich strong velvety baritone voice in the Sinatra sound, but not an impersonation.
-Man #2 - 1940's big band crooner. Should have a strong lyric baritone voice and be an excellent part singer. Sings up to a G. Man #2 should also have a natural and unaffected flair for comedy as he carries much of the show's humor and lighter moments. He spends much of the show trying to learn how to be "cool".
-Woman #1 - Represents the female-identifying version of Frank ("rat pack" period). She is classy, drips with style, and sophistication. Vocally she is a strong mezzo-soprano, who can also belt and has soprano capability; think Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and Judy Garland. She sings through a wide range vocally.
-Woman #2 - Energetic and youthful. She represents the era's leading actresses. Woman #2 is the type of woman that always attracted Frank (aka Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Mia Farrow, etc). Vocally this character needs to have that same smooth liquid big band singer sound of the ’40s. Woman #2 is also a mezzo but does sing some soprano parts. Her voice should be lighter and provide a contrast to Woman #1.
*All 4 performers must handle part singing/harmonies and should dance or move well. *Tap ability is a plus.

-DENNY VARNEY: (Vocal Range: Tenor C3 - Ab4; Falsetto to D5) Five years after High School Graduation, Denny still lives with his mother. -DUKE HENDERSON: (Vocal Range: Bass/Baritone Ab2 - G4; Falsetto to Eb5) Duke is the new guy in the singing group but from the wrong side of the tracks. He works for “Big Stuff Auto”, the new sponsor of the group. He’s added to the group to make it a proper quartet. He’s also in love with Lois, the Boss’s daughter. Duke’s “Bad-Boy” attitude might just break up the group’s chances to win the contest. Strong comedic timing.
-LOIS FRANKLIN: (Vocal Range: G3 - F5) Daughter of “Big Eddie” Franklin, owner of “Big Stuff Auto”, and herself a former song leader at Springfield High, she arrives on the scene to help shape the boys into a real singing and dancing group. Can Lois be the super-glue that holds the whole group together? NOTE: Doubles as the off-stage voice of Mrs. Varney, Denny’s mother. Strong comedic timing.
