VIDEO SUBMISSIONS: The Ensemble Company's 2024 Season
The Ensemble Company, the award-winning repertory company in residence at Imagine Performing Arts Center, are seeking non-union performers for its 2024 season.
We are seeking to cast the following roles in our season:
IT’S ONLY A PLAY by Terrance McNally - Matthew MacDermid, Director; Rehearsal Start: Mid-December; Performances: January 19-28, 2024
James Whicker (male-presenting, 40s-50s) - An egotistical but insecure comic actor who passed up a chance to star in a Broadway play for a television series.
Peter Austin (male-presenting, 30s-40s) - James’s former best friend. The nervous and excitable playwright, desperate to reach the status and level of iconic playwrights of the past.
Julia Budder (female-presenting, 30s-40s) - a first-time producer of the Broadway play THE GOLDEN EGG and one of the few genuinely nice people in the group.
Virginia Noyes (female-presenting, 40s-50s) - dissolute star of the play; she wears an ankle monitor and drinks and snorts cocaine throughout.
Frank Finger (male-presenting, 20s-30s) - the egomaniacal, “genius” British director.
Ira Drew (male-presenting, 50s-70s) - insecure theatre critic with writing aspirations of his own.
Gus (male-presenting, 20s) - polite, someone naive farm buy who checks the coats and hats but has aspirations for a Broadway career.
IN THE NEXT ROOM (OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY) by Sarah Ruhl - Gabriel Garcia, Director; Rehearsal Start: January 29, 2024; Performances: March 1-10, 2024
Dr. Givings (male-presenting, 30s-40s) - a gynecologist who specializes in treating hysteria. Analytical, but cold, and kind.
Catherine Givings (female-presenting, late 20s-early 30s) - Dr. Givings’ wife and mother to their newborn baby girl. Charismatic and a little chaotic. Romantic and unfulfilled.
Sabrina Daldry (female-presenting, 20s-30s) - Dr. Givings’ new patient who suffers from deep depression.
Annie (female-presenting, 30s-40s) - Dr Givings’ midwife assistant. Quiet and kind.
Leo Irving (male-presenting, 20s-30s) - Another patient. A romantic and eloquent painter from England.
Elizabeth (female-presenting, 20s-30s) - African-American. The Givings’ wet nurse. Polite and reserved. She’s just lost her baby.
Mr. Daldry (male-presenting, 40s-50s) - Sabrina’s husband. Unhappy in his marriage and somewhat forward.

Antoinette ‘Toni’ Lafayette (female-presenting, 50s) - the oldest sibling; white.
Rhys Thurston (male-presenting, late teens) - her son; white.
Beauregarde ‘Bo’ Lafayette (male-presenting, 40s) - the middle sibling; white (PLEASE NOTE THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST).
Rachael Kramer-Lafayette (female-presenting, 30s-40s) - his wife; white.
Cassidy ‘Cassie’ Kramer-Lafayette (female-presenting, 18 to play mid-teens) - their older child; white.
Ainsley Kramer-Lafayette (male-presenting, a child) - their younger child; white.
Francois ‘Franz/Frank’ Lafayette (male-presenting, 30s-40s) - the youngest sibling; white.
River Rayner (female-presenting, early 20s but looks younger) - his fiancée; white
SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER by Tennessee Williams - Matthew MacDermid, Director; Rehearsal Start: Early August; Performances; September 6-15, 2024
Catherine Holly (female-presenting, 20s-30s) - a young, troubled woman who witnesses the death of her beloved cousin Sebastian. She returns home, and her aunt Mrs. Venable has her institutionalized to keep the truth quiet.
Violet Venable (female presenting, 50s-70s) - an older, wheelchair-bound woman insistent on preserving the memory and legacy of her son Sebastian. (PLEASE NOTE THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST.)
Dr. Cukrowicz (małe-presenting, 30s) - a young, handsome doctor who specializes in a new psychological treatment for disturbed patients.
Miss Foxhill (female-presenting, 40s-70s) - an attendant to Mrs. Venable and is quiet and dutiful.
George Holly (male-presenting, 20s) - Catherine’s brother who is only focused on the money Sebastian left to the Holly family in his will.
Mrs. Holly (female-presenting, 50s-70s) - Catherine’s mother. She is desperate to keep the peace with Mrs. Venable so she and her children will receive the money and possessions Sebastian left to them in his will.
Sister Felicity (female-presenting, 30s-70s) - a nun from Saint Mary's who is in charge of Catherine Holly while she is outside the institution.
THE THANKSGIVING PLAY by Larissa FastHorse - Matthew MacDermid, Director; Rehearsals Start: Early October; Performances: November 8-17, 2024
In her note on casting, playwright Larissa Fasthorse writes: "People of color that can pass as white should be considered” and we are very much encouraging actors who identify in this way to audition. Actors must have strong comedic skills & an adventurous sense of play.
Logan (female-presenting, 30s-40s) - Caucasian looking, the high school drama teacher that’s always pushing the envelope in potentially inappropriate ways. Earnest about theatre and proving herself. “Woke,” vegan, nauseated at the mere mention of turkey.
Jaxton (male-presenting, 30s-40s) - Caucasian looking, yoga practitioner/actor. Politically correct to a fault, a big one. He’s that confident guy everyone loves, but his logical PC thinking takes weird turns. Self-described “vegan ally.”
Alicia (female-presenting, 20s-30s) - brunette, Caucasian looking but has looks that would have been cast as ethnic in 1950s movies. Without guile. Sexy and hot, but not bright.
Caden (male-presenting, 30s-40s) - Caucasian looking, the academic. Awkward elementary school history teacher with dramatic aspirations but no experience. His dream is to have his plays performed by semi-professional actors.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL, adapted from the classic by Charles Dickens - Gabriel Garcia, Director; Rehearsals Start: Mid-November; Performances: December 6-15, 2024
