GUIDELINES
ROLES Claudia: Female (18+) black, teenage girl. Precocious, sensitive girl. She must be able to move gracefully between the innocence of youth and the wisdom of the narrator who has lived through it all; dexterity with direct address a must. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Freida/Darlene: Female (18+) black, teenage girl. Claudia’s older sister; somewhat more practical than Claudia. Confident in her understanding of the world. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Pecola: Female (18+) black, teenage girl. A shy, quiet, resigned and somewhat pained presence; she should be completely innocent; it is imperative that she have very dark brown skin. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Mrs. Breedlove: Female (40-49) woman, black, 40s. An older version of Pecola, also has a dark brown complexion; painfully shy and insecure, and still very adept at addressing the audience. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Cholly: Male (40-49) man, black, 40s. The shell of a man who may have been physically impressive at one time, dark brown complexion. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Maureen Pearl: Female (18+) black, teenage girl. Very pretty; more complicated than merely “snotty” light-skinned African-American. Will also play track of White Girl. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Mama: Female woman, black, 40s. She possesses an impressive presence. She loves her children and this should be evident despite her stern manner. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
Soaphead Church: Male man, black, 40s. Charismatic, odd, charming, and mature. Ethnicity: Black / African Descent
All characters need to sing the opening line of “Precious Lord” – you can sing it acapella or accompany yourself. “Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help me stand I am tired, I am weak, I am worn Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand, precious Lord Lead me home”
