Seeking Adult Actors Non-union (18+)

(There will be a separate audition for actors 16-17 years for ensemble roles only. We will post this separately; please do not submit an audition here if you are under 18 years old)

The Athens Theatre strongly encourages and welcomes performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, Gender-Nonconforming, Non-Binary, shapes, sizes, and actors with varying abilities to submit for any of the roles below with the understanding that there are individual characters that may identify as a woman or man.

Please submit a headshot, résumé, a 16-32-bar cut of singing in the style of the show, and a dance reel (if available).

Submissions must be submitted through the Auditions Manager by Sunday, February 9, at 11:59 pm.

Callbacks are by invitation only and will be held at the Athens Theatre on Sunday, February 16, from 6:00 to 10:30 p.m.

SHOW DESCRIPTION:

Set in the late 1950s, written in the 1970s, and continually revived in the decades since then. Many consider Grease a timeless classic. It's a story of camaraderie, challenging the status quo, and being true to oneself. With this production, we plan to take a more contemporary look at this show and expose many issues within the script and the time period that are often glossed over or watered down in other performances.

We are looking for a cast eager to delve deeper into these well-known characters and discover ways to make them more human and genuine. We want to explore new ways of thinking about these characters.

The Athens production of Grease is performed with a live band and will also feature songs from the movie: Hopelessly Devoted to You, You’re the One That I Want, Sandy, and Grease!

SPECIAL NOTE:

Grease is a high-energy show with much physical movement and partner dance. As such, most roles in this production involve some level of physical intimacy/touch.
In addition, intimacy also occurs between multiple principal characters and includes kissing, embracing, and other moments of physical touch, which is noted below.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

SANDY DUMBROWSKI (Female Presenting, all ethnicities - 18+): The new girl in town; hopeless romantic. She finds friendship with the Pink Ladies, who help her uncover her own social savviness. It is imperative that our Sandy understands that her decision to change occurs for herself, not to win the man.
VOCAL RANGE: A3–F#5

DANNY ZUKO (Male Presenting, all ethnicities - 18+): The leader of the Burger Palace Boys; strong and confident, with an air of easy-going charm.
VOCAL RANGE: D4-B5
This role requires onstage physical intimacy/kiss

BETTY RIZZO (Female Presenting, all ethnicities - 18+): The leader of the Pink Ladies. She is tough, sarcastic, and outspoken but vulnerable.
VOCAL RANGE: A3-C5
This role requires onstage physical intimacy/kiss

FRENCHY (Female Presenting, all ethnicities - 18+): A dreamer and good-natured. She embraces the beauty industry and is fussy about her appearance, particularly her hair. She can’t wait to finish high school to be a beautician.
VOCAL RANGE: A3-D5

MARTY (Female Presenting, all ethnicities - 18+): The ‘beauty’ of the Pink Ladies; pretty and looks older than the other girls but betrays her actual age when she opens her mouth. She tries to act sophisticated.
VOCAL RANGE: A3-D5

JAN (Female Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): Funny, loud, and the awkward member of the Pink Ladies. Sometimes shy with the boys.
VOCAL RANGE: A3-C5

KENICKIE (Male Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): Second-in-command of the Burger Palace Boys. Tough-looking, tattooed, surly, avoids any show of softness. Has an off-beat sense of humor.
VOCAL RANGE: C4-F5

DOODY (Male Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): Youngest of the guys. Boyish, open, with a disarming smile and a hero-worshipping attitude toward the other guys. He also plays the guitar.
VOCAL RANGE: D4-A5

ROGER (Male Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): The “anything-for-a-laugh” type. Full of mischief, half-baked schemes, and ideas. A clown who enjoys putting other people on.
VOCAL RANGE: D4-A5

SONNY LATIERRI (Male Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): A braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real ladies’ man.
VOCAL RANGE: G3-A5

PATTY SIMCOX (Female Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): A stereotypical cheerleader, sure of herself, but can be given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm. She’s a bit of a pain and unpopular with the Pink Ladies and can twirl a baton.
VOCAL RANGE: D4-A4

CHA-CHA aka CHARLENE DIGREGORIO (Female Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): The best dancer at St. Bernadette’s, a loudmouth, she wins the dancing competition with Danny.
VOCAL RANGE: C4-C5

EUGENE FLORCZYK (Male Presenting, all ethnicities – 18+): The class valedictorian. Physically awkward. An apple-polisher, smug and pompous but gullible.
VOCAL RANGE: A3-E5

TEEN ANGEL (Gender fluid, all ethnicities – 18+): Frenchy’s suave and slick guardian angel, who encourages her to stay in school.
VOCAL RANGE: E4-F5

VINCE FONTAINE (Male Presenting, all ethnicities – 25+): A typical “teen audience” radio disc jockey. Slick, egotistical, fast-talking. A veteran “greaser.”
VOCAL RANGE: Flexible vocal range

JOHNNY CASINO (Gender fluid, all ethnicities – 18+): A “greaser” student at Rydell who leads a rock ‘n’ roll band and thinks of himself as a real rock ‘n’ roll idol.
VOCAL RANGE: G4-E5

MISS LYNCH (Female Presenting, all ethnicities – 30+): A no-nonsense, serious, English teacher.
VOCAL RANGE: Flexible vocal range

ENSEMBLE (Open to all – 18+): Students at Rydell High School, Beauty School Dropout Ensemble, Greased Lightning Ensemble. Loud, energetic, variety of personalities. We are looking for dancers, singers, and high-energy performers.
